Janice Leona Posthuma, the daughter of John and Lena Van Roekel 

Schelhaas, was born on October 11, 1943 in Pipestone County, MN.  She 

grew up in Pipestone Co. and attended Christian School in Holland, MN and 

graduated from the Pipestone High School in 1961.  Janice was united in 

marriage to Gary Posthuma on February 1, 1963 in Woodstock, MN.  After 

their marriage they made their home on a farm in Lowville Township, 

Murray County, Minnesota where they continued to live after raising their 

six children.  Janice passed away on Sunday, July 30, 2006 at the age of 

62 at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.  She was a former 

4-H Leader and Sunday School Teacher for many years.  Janice enjoyed 

sewing, knitting, cooking, square dancing, gardening, traveling and 

spending time with her family.



Survivors include her husband, Gary; six children and their spouses, Paul 

and Stacy Posthuma of Lake Wilson, MN, Sheila and Ken VanMeveren of Sioux 

Falls, SD, David and Audrey Posthuma of Omaha, NE, Mark and Rana Posthuma 

of Seattle, WA, Joan and Lance Vierra of Denver, CO and Lisa and Sean 

Mentzer of Phoenix, AZ; 15 grandchildren; two sisters, Caroline DeGrote 

and her husband Henry of Russell, MN and Laura Posthuma of Moville, IA; 

two brothers and their spouses, Jake and Gladys Schelhaas of Jasper, MN 

and Nelvin and Geneva Schelhaas of Haywarden, IA.  She is preceded in 

death by her parents and an infant brother.



Funeral services were held at Skandia Free Church, rural Balaton, MN on 

Thursday, August 3, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Ray Shepard 

officiating.  The pianist was Deb Petersen.  The pallbearers were her 

grandchildren.  Private family interment at Hillside Cemetery, Lake 

Wilson, MN."
