Melba Smith and the Rev. Steven Foster, grandson, officiating. 1912 - Ella Edith Rice - 2004 Ella Rice was born on April 26, 1912, in Peoria, Illinois to Smith and Mary Hathaway Ames. She grew up and attended schools in Peoria. On April 26, 1934, she and Roy Baer were married and resided in Peoria. Roy passed away on March 8, 1942. On July 9, 1945, she and Fred Rice were married in Peoria. Following their marriage they farmed south of Hadley, Minnesota. Fred passed away on July 10, 1967. In 1970, Ella moved to Dovray and lived there until September 2003. She moved to Winter Haven, Florida to live with her daughter Jane. Ella passed away on November 3, 2004, at the Winter Haven Hospital at the age of 92. Ella was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Dovray, Minnesota. Ella enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking and Scrabble. Survivors include three daughters, one son, and their spouses: Eleanor Holmes, Warrenton, MO; Jane and Bob Nama, Winter Haven, FL; Joanne and Clayton French, Van Buren, AR; Roger and Kathy Rice, Slayton, MN; seven stepchildren: Marge and Allen Hartman, Barrett, MN; Margie Horn, Raytown, MO; Mable Rice, Raytown, MO; Dan and Kathleen Baer, Oak Grove, MO; Janet and Tine Hardeman, Manilla, Philippines; Drexel Lasley, Huntsville, AL and Grace and Howard Foster, Sarasota, FL; 42 grandchildren; several great- grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her first husband Roy; second husband Fred; two grandchildren: Eric and Timothy: step-son Durwin Rice: three brothers: George, Benjamin and John Ames and three sisters: Hildred Frank, Hazel Burtsfield and Ethel Hines. Ella will be greatly missed by her family and friends, but they have the comfort in knowing she is with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Memorial services will be at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Dovray, MN on Friday, November 19, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Melba Smith and the Rev. Steven Foster, grandson, officiating. Special eulogies given by grandsons: Alan Rice, Roger Nama and John Holmes. The pianist is Marian Johnson. Special music sung by granddaughter, Julie Hearn. Interment is at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.
