FileFormat by Terri--MNArchives Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Judy Clarke Submitted: November 2004 ========================================================================= 1917 - Dick Ruiter - 2004 Dick Ruiter was born October 25, 1917 to Dick and Wilhelmina (Rodenburgh) Ruiter on a farm near Valley Springs, South Dakota. He attended Valley Springs Public School and the Reformed Church. As a child he moved with his family to the Leota, Minnesota area where he finished school and then began farming with his father and brothers. He made confession of faith in the Bethel Reformed Church in Leota where he later served as an elder and a deacon. On August 23, 1940, Dick married Henrietta Van Lant at her parents home and they made their home in Leota. After marriage he owned and operated a produce business in Leota for eight years. In 1949, they began farming in the Leota and Chandler area until 1981, when they retired and moved into Chandler, Minnesota. He was a member of the Chandler Reformed Church and enjoyed fishing and woodworking after his retirement. In July of 2004, Dick became a resident of the Edgebrook Care Center in Edgerton, Minnesota where he died on Thursday, November 18, 2004, at the age of 87. Dick is survived by his wife Henrietta; four sons: Darrel and Sylvia, Oakdale, CA; John and Darlene, Edgerton, MN; Les and Mary , Lake Wilson, MN and Dean and Joyce, Cottage Grove, MN; four daughters: Mina Gritters, Bellflower, CA; Loreen and Les Sankey, Chandler, MN; Pat and Bob Gregory, Sioux Falls, SD and Ruth and Loren Carlson, Fulda, MN; 26 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; three sisters: Tracy Baartmen, Grand Rapids, MI; Clasina Prins, Worthington, MN; and Johanna and John Bothof, Slayton, MN; many nieces, nephews and cousins. His parents, five brothers: Cornie, Joe, Art, Henry and Sam; two sisters: Betty DeBoer and Jenni Uithoven and one son-in-law Al Gritters preceded him in death. Funeral services were held on Monday, November 22, 2004, 10:30 a.m. at Chandler Reformed Church, Chandler, MN with Rev. Gary Mulder officiating. Organist was Julie Reitsma. Vocalists are Marlene Hofkamp and Evie Gilman. Casketbearers were Dave Gritters, Mike Gregory, Brad Sankey, Jeff Gregory, Chad Ruiter, Dan Ruiter, Steve Ruiter, Jeremy Carlson, Bryan Carlson, Alan Ruiter and Greg Ruiter. Honorary Casketbearers were his granddaughters. Interment in Chandler Memorial Cemetery, Chandler, MN.
