He grew up in Lake Wilson, where he worked on the family farm until entering the service. From 1952 to 1954, during the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Army. He received the Korean Service Ribbon with a Bronze Service Star, the National Defense Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he married Marlys Fischer of Pipestone, Minnesota in 1954. They farmed north of Pipestone for several years before moving to Lebanon. He worked for Champion Plywood for 14 years and then worked for the Lebanon School District as a custodian at the Waterloo School for five years. He retired in 1994. He was a member of the Lacomb Baptist Church and the Two-Cylinder Tractor Club. He restored old tractors. Richard died on Thursday, March 17, 2005 at Yuma Regional Hospital in Yuma, Arizona at the age of 72. He is survived by his wife Marlys; daughter and so-in-law Janet and Lynn Rupp, Colombia Falls, MT; sons and daughters-in-law: Leroy and Karen Runia, Lacomb; Allan and Margie Runia, Duluth, MN; Bruce and Cheryl Runia, Sweet Home and Kevin and Julie Runia, Holiday, FL; sisters: Evelyn Mitchell, Dorothy Mitchell, Helen Horn and Phyliss Nielsen; brothers: Jerry Runia, Robert Runia, Vernon Runia, Wallace Runia, Mike Runia and Butch Runia; grandchildren: Alisa, Robin, Renee, Max, Tiffany, Travis, Tricia, Kaitlyn, Allison, Ashley, Michael and Cameron; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers: Gilbert Runia nd Fredrick Runia and one sister Ruthann. Funeral services were held at the Lacomb Baptist Church with burial at the Lacomb Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lacomb Baptist Church Building Fund and sent in care of Huston-Jost Funeral Home, 86 W. Grant St. Lebanon, OR 97355.
