Schaeffer Jr. was born on March 5, 1920 Lime Lake Township, near Avoca, MN to Frank and Ida Olson Schaeffer. He grew up on the family farm, attended country school and graduated from Slayton High School in 1938. He worked in California building airplanes. In January 1942 he enlisted in the U. S. Army and served in the European Theatre. He and Anita Benson were married in Pipestone, MN on December 27, 1946. They lived in Sioux Falls, SD. In 1953, they moved to their farm near Avoca, MN where they lived until 1963 when they retired from farming. They moved into Avoca and Frank managed the Avoca Liquor Store for five years and then went to work for Rupp Construction. He was a blade operator until his retirement in 1992. He helped Vern Crowley farm until a few years ago. Anita died on September 10, 1998. Frank continued living in Avoca. He passed away unexpectedly at his home on September 22, 2004 at the age of 84. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Slayton. Frank was an avid gardener and baker, sharing his fresh pies, jellies and vegetables with many. He was a member of the Currie American Legion and enjoyed playing cards there with many friends. He will be remembered in Avoca walking his bulldog, Teig. He enjoyed fishing, watching sports and visiting with all. He loved his family and spending time with them. Survivors include five children and their spouses: Diane and Kurt Pederson of San Clemente, CA, Dale and Janet Schaeffer of Avoca, Dawn and Duane Spartz of Slayton, Debra and Randy Graham of Adrian, MN, and Deidre Ragan and her special friend, Gary Reker of Slayton; 12 grandchildren: Lee, Boyd and Justin Pederson, Angie Schumacher, Dana and Cassie Schaeffer, Frankie, Kaley and Kim Spartz, Clint Christensen, Anita Miller, and Tara Ragan; five great-grandchildren: Hayley, Alex, Andrew and Griffin, and Zachery; and a sister, Shirla Rensink of Slayton. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Anita, brother, Cliff Schaeffer and an infant sister, Shirley. Funeral services were held at theUnited Methodist Church in Slayton, MN on Saturday, September 25, 2004 at 10:30 AM with the Rev. Gwen Bohlke officiating. The organist was Janet Voges. The pallbearers were Vern Crowley, Axel Frisk, Drew Oakland, Ross Behrends, Dave Schreier and George Opdahl. Interment is in Slayton Memorial Gardens, Slayton, MN. Military honors accorded by the Currie Legion Post.
