She grew up on the family farm, attended Avoca Elementary School and graduated from Slayton High School in 1947. She lived at home and took care of her family. She and Leland Schmidt were married on February 24, 1949 at the American Lutheran parsonage in Avoca. Following their marriage, they lived in Avoca until 1953 when they moved to Walker, MN. They ran a dairy farm and Dottie worked at the bakery in town. In 1958, they returned to Avoca and Dottie and Erna Niehaus were partners in running the Friendly Tavern for a few years. She also did cleaning at the elevator, church and parsonage. Dottie passed away at Sioux Valley Hospice in Sioux Falls, SD on March 12, 2006 at the age of 76 years. She was an active member of Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Avoca where she belonged to W.E.L.C.A. and Circle. Some of Dottie's favorite pastimes included cooking, canning pickles, collecting knickknacks, especially angels, and she loved animals. Dottie enjoyed staying current and involved in the lives both of her immediate and extended family. Survivors include her husband, Leland Schmidt of Avoca; two sons, Michael Schmidt and his wife, Bonnie of Monticello, MN and Steven Schmidt of Avoca; two grandchildren; Nathan Schmidt and his wife, Jennifer Fiedor of Woodbury, MN, and Tyler Schmidt of Monticello, MN; and her brother, George Zanter of Slayton. She is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and three brothers, Elizabeth Aeilts, Paul Zanter, Albert Zanter, Herman Lundblad and Mary Ann Lundblad. Funeral services were held at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Avoca, MN on Thursday, March 16, 2006 at 11:30 AM with the Rev. Arlen Foss officiating. The organist was Nancy Lee Pierson. The soloist was Jennifer Fiedor. The pallbearers were Dennis Opdahl, Roger Opdahl, Gordon Opdahl, Dale Schmidt Jr., Gary Schmidt and Duane Paplow. Interment in Faith Lutheran Cemetery in Avoca, MN.
