"Ernie" Steemken - 2004 Ernest H. "Ernie" Steemken was born August 10, 1904, in Oldenburg, Germany to John and Alma (Stolle) Steemken. He moved from Germany to Sioux City at the age of 18. He was employed with Frank Pilley Dairy Co. in Sioux City for 22 years. Later, he was a maintenance man with Valley Park Apartments for 10 years. Ernie married Estella B. (Grove) on January 10, 1937, in Emerson, Nebraska. Ernie had resided in Currie, Minnesota for the past 12 years. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing and watching pro wrestling and stock car racing. Years ago, he operated the Silver Dollar Booth at Riverside Park. His lifetime enjoyment was playing Bingo. Ernie passed away on Monday, December 13, 2004, at Hospice House in Slayton, Minnesota at the age of 90. E rnie is survived by four children: Wanda Honeycutt (husband Bob), Currie, MN; Carol Funk (husband Herb), Milton, FL; Gerald Steemken (wife Susan), Omaha, NE; and Gary Steemken (wife DeDee), Sioux City, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and three great-great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Estella in 1992; daughter Gloria Jean Steemken in infancy; great-grandson James Leroy Florke; one sister and two brothers. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 17, 2004, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sioux City, IA with Rev. Tess Panamarow officiating. Interment in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, IA. Meyer Brothers Funeral Home, Sioux City in charge of arrangements.
