FileFormat by Terri--MNArchives Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Judy Clarke Submitted: June 2007 ========================================================================= Murray County Raymond Joseph Streff was born on November 27, 1924, near Alton, Iowa to Felix and Ann Pottebaum Streff. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. Ray was enlisted in the United States Navy on October 24, 1944, and served as Seaman 1st Class in WW II. After his discharge on July 1, 1946, Ray returned to Alton to farm with his family. On January 11, 1949, he and Darlene Mousel were married at Alton, Iowa. They farmed near LeMars, Iowa until 1952 when they moved to a farm northwest of Slayton and farmed there until 1987 when they moved to Slayton. Ray was custodian at St. Ann’s Church in Slayton for several years. Darlene passed away on February 2, 1997. Ray continued living in Slayton. On December 14, 2006, Ray became a resident of the Golden Living Center- Slayton and passed away there on June 5, 2007, at the age of 82. Ray was a member of St. Ann’s Church in Slayton and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Ray also was a member of the Slayton VFW Post # 6233 and served as past commander. Ray served on the Murray County Cattleman Association, the Hadley Elevator Board and on the Murray County Shipping Association. Ray enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing cards, hunting, traveling and bowling in his younger years. Survivors include five children and their spouses: Donna and Loren Chambers, Aitkin, MN; Paulette and Pat Taffe, Plymouth, MN; Rex Streff, Hadley, MN; Dean and Sue Streff, Slayton, MN; and Mike and Lori Streff, Coon Rapids, MN; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters: Stella Frederes, LeMars, IA; and Charlene Sheitler, LeMars, IA. He was preceded in death by his wife Darlene; daughter Barbara; grandson Nathan Streff; daughter-in-law Jane Streff; six brothers: Clarence, Vincent, Robert, Clifford, Ervin, and Francis; one sister Calista Frederes. Funeral services were St. Ann’s Church Slayton, MN on Monday June 11, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Patrick Arens officiating. The organist was Sharon Lais. The song leader was Joanne Halbur. The pallbearers were his grandchildren Shane Roy, Corey Taffe, Troy Taffe, Ryan Streff, Jordan Ennenga, Tayler Streff and Zachary Streff. Honorary pallbearers were Taydem Wall, Heidi Streff, Britta Streff, Cassidy Streff, and Cady Streff. Interment is at St. Ann’s Cemetery. Military honors accorded by the Slayton Legion and Slayton VFW.
