Schutz Suedbeck. She grew up on the family farm. The family moved to Slayton in 1938 and Raphie graduated from Slayton High School in 1941. She and Arthur P. Vande Velde were married at St. Ann's Church in Slayton on May 25, 1950. Art passed away on March 16, 1971. Raphie worked at the Veteran's Service Office at the Murray County Courthouse for several years and owned a custom drapery business, Slayton Draperies Service. In October 2002, Raphie moved to Farmington, Minnesota to be closer to her children. She passed away at the Minnesota Masonic Home in Bloomington, Minnesota on March 29, 2005, at the age of 82. She was a member of St. Ann's Church in Slayton, the Catholic Daughters of America and W.C.C.W. Raphie enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and spending time with her family. Survivors include her five children and their spouses: Gail Harmon, Louisville, NE; Mark and Janine Vande Velde, Moorhead, MN; Jim and Bonnie Vande Velde, Bloomington, MN; and Barb and Paul McHenry, Farmington, MN; step-son Bill and his wife Carol Vande Velde, Alexandria, MN; nine grandchildren: Ryan and Vanessa Willems, Ashley and Chris Vande Velde; Kassie, Kenny and Karl Vande Velde; and Lauren and Sean McHenry; five step-grandchildren: Chris, Phillip, Tim, Jon and Cathy Vande Velde; four sisters and their husbands: Florence and Joe Disch, Slayton; Ione, Sister Constance of Crookston, MN; Lollie Engebretson, Slayton, and Vira and Jed Dommeyer, Northfield, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Art; brother Archie Suedbeck; and Esther Johnson. Funeral services were held at St. Ann's Church, Slayton, MN on Saturday, April 2, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Martin Schaefer officiating. The organist was Judy Andrews. The song leader was Rita Lear. The pallbearers were Ryan Willems, Christopher Vande Velde, Brad Engebretson, Dennis Disch, Joseph Suedbeck and Joseph James Disch Jr. Interment is at St. Ann's Cemetery in Slayton, MN. Totzke Funeral Home, Slayton charge of arrangements.
