Born Dec. 24, 1911, in Monroe, Iowa, he was the son of Jilles and Antje Spaargaren Van Nieuwenhuyzen. He married Jacoba De Vries on Aug. 10, 1937, at the home of her parents. She died Jan. 15, 2000. In his youth, he and his family moved to a farm near Edgerton, where he attended and graduated from Edgerton Christian Elementary School. After marriage, they moved to California, where they lived until 1945, when they moved to a farm southeast of Chandler. They sold their farm in 1957 and purchased the hardware store in Chandler, living in the home attached to the store. He and his sons worked as plumbers and also did custom farming. He retired from the hardware business in 1977 and built a home in Chandler. He was a member of the Christian Reformed Church, Chandler, where he served on the council. He sang with the Chandler CRC men's quartet for several years. Surviving are three sons, Cordell (Dorie) Van Nieuwenhuyzen, Oakdale, Calif., Bill (Rose) Van Nieuwenhuyzen, Chandler, and Jim (Jackie) Van Nieuwenhyzen Edgerton; two daughters, Marilyn (Jim) Liles, Beeville, Texas, and Joyce (Howard) Poppema, Hospers, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Chandler Funeral Home, Chandler, and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Friday at Christian Reformed Church, Chandler. The service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Christian Reformed Church, Chandler, with the Rev. Peter Brouwer officiating. Burial will be in Chandler Memorial Cemetery.
