He grew up on the farm and attended school in St. Kilian. He entered the U.S. Navy on November 9, 1945 and served in WWII on the U.S.S. J.C. Owens until his honorable discharge on October 17, 1947. Virgil was united in marriage to Dolores Almeida on October 25, 1947 at St. Elizabeth Church in Bristol, Rhode Island. After their marriage they made their home on a farm near St. Kilian. They remained on the farm until moving to Slayton after their retirement where they have lived for the past 25 years. They enjoyed spending winters in Yuma, AZ for many years. In January of 2007 Virgil moved to the Our House Hospice Home in Slayton and passed away there on February 10, 2007 at the age of 80. He was a member of St. Ann’s Church in Slayton. Virgil enjoyed golfing, spending time with his family and visiting with friends. Survivors include his wife, Dolores of Slayton; one daughter, Deb Meyer and her husband, Larry of Slayton, MN; seven sons and their spouses, Clifford and Linda Vaske of Nicollet, MN, Chuck Vaske of Wilmont, MN, Cordell and Deb Vaske of Fairmont, MN, Randy and Mary Vaske of Hugo, MN, Curtis and Tammy Vaske of Wilmont, MN, Roger and LeAnn Vaske of Springfield, MN and Gary and Michellee Vaske of Omaha, NE; 28 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, one son, Dana Vaske, one granddaughter, Amber and one brother, Orville Vaske. Funeral Services were held at St. Ann’s Church in Slayton, MN on Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at 10:30 AM with Fr. Patrick Arens officiating. The organist is Judy Andrews. The song leader is Cheryl Kern. The pallbearers are his grandsons.
