FileFormat by Terri--MNArchives Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Judy Clarke Submitted: February 2005 ========================================================================= Alfred Wynia was born on August 18, 1927 in Hadley, Minnesota, to Simon and Tillie Vlieger Wynia. He grew up on the family farm near Hadley and attended country school. Alf farmed with his father for several years. In 1950 Alf enlisted in the U. S. Army and served during the Korean War. He was stationed in both the United States and Germany. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant in November 1952. On November 25, 1952 he and Joyce Gaul were married at St. Ann’s Church in Slayton. Alf worked for Bell Telephone in Windom for several months before moving to a farm near Lake Wilson, MN. Five years later, they moved to a farm northeast of Slayton where they have lived ever since. In 1976, Alfred’s son-in-law Larry started farming in the area and they farmed together. In 1984, his son Kevin started farming with Alfred and all three families farmed together. Alf passed away on February 12, 2005 at the Murray County Hospital in Slayton at the age of 77. He was a member of St. Ann’s Church in Slayton and had served on the parish council, the finance committee, the cemetery board and also was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Slayton VFW Post #6322 and the Slayton American Legion Post and had served as commander of the VFW. Alf also served on the Murray Township board for nine years and also served on the Farm Credit Board for nine years. He was a lifetime member of the Shetek Motorcycle Club, the Broken Arrow Archery Club and the Slayton Driftbreakers Snowmobile Club. Alf enjoyed hunting with a bow and arrow, snowmobiling, and fishing up north. Alf especially enjoyed ice fishing with his children and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Joyce of Slayton; six children and their spouses; Gary and Joan Wynia of Hastings, MN, Katherine and Lawrence Laleman of Currie, MN, Brenda and Ed Heard of Woodstock, MN, Shirley and Mike Theede of St Mary’s Point, MN, Kevin and Sara Lee Wynia of Slayton, MN, and Terry and Lori Wynia of Marshall, MN, 17 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three sisters, Jeanette Belling of Belgrade, MN; Ella Priebe of Mesa, AZ; and Samona Snow of Ainsworth, NE. He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Betty Haken, Margaret Nellis, Tracy Grover, and Matilda (Boots) Wynia and brothers Jacob, Rudy, and Jerry Wynia. Funeral Services were held at St. Ann’s Church Slayton, MN on Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at 10:30 AM with Fr. Patrick Arens officiating. The organist was Judy Andrews. The song leader was John Palmer. The pallbearers were his grandchildren; Kevin Laleman, Gregory Laleman, Laramie Wynia, Derrick Heard, Jeffery Heard, Heidi Theede, Kristi Theede, and Katie Wynia. Honorary pallbearers are furnished by the Knights of Columbus. Interment is at St. Ann’s Cemetery Slayton, MN. Military honors are furnished by the Slayton VFW and Slayton Legion Post.
