Leighton K. Zeiner, was fatally injured when his bomber crashed in England. Five crewman, including Zeiner, the navigator, of the fortress, "Little Twink," were killed in the mishap. They were returning from a New Year's Eve raid against southern Germany when their plane took fire at 3,000 feet. Pilot J. Agamsik, from Holyoke, Mass., told the crew members to bail out; the first seven made it, but as the last five left the plane they were so close to ground their parachutes did not have time to open. Three crew members left on the plane got out alive after the fortress crashed through tree tops and skidded into a field. Lieut. Zeiner was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Zeiner, formerly of Dundee. He received his high school education in Fulda, and attended the Worthington Junior College for two years. He enlisted in the air corps, and in September, when he had completed his training, was home on furlough. His mother has joined the Women's Army Corps, and within the past ten days has been sent to Miami, Florida, after finishing her basic training at Fort Des Moines. Lt. Zeiner is survived by one sister, Mrs. Alfred Block (Marjorie) of Westbrook." (This article was obtained from a relative's scrapbook. The name and date of the paper are unknown.)
