Kebis Submitted: Oct 2002 ========================================================================= Journal, February 16, 1946 MAN WHO MARRIED DAUGHTER OF FOUNDER PIONEER TRADING POST DIES AT 90 Louis Bushard Dies At Fairfax; Son-in-law of Hazen Mooers A death of more than passing notice is that of Louis Philip Bushard, 90, at his home in Fairfax. Mr. Bushard came to Minnesota in 1861, and remained in St. Paul for a time, then came to West Newton township, where he was one of the earliest settlers. Shortly after settling in West Newton township he married Ellen Mooers, daughter of Hazen Mooers, founder of the trading post at Little Rock, some 14 or 15 miles up the Minnesota River from New Ulm. Little Rock was famous for many years in this part of the Northwest and many are the tales told of the early "take" of furs, which were transported down the Minnesota River from the western part of the state and sold to Hazen Mooers. Wife Died in 1885 Mrs. Bushard died in March 1885, and was survived by her husband and five children. On May 11, 1896, Mr. Bushard and Theresia Bastian were married at St. George. They continued to reside on the farm in West Newton township until six years ago when the removed to Fairfax. Besides his wife, Mr. Bushard is survived by the following children: Mrs. Jos. Inofer, St. Paul; William Bushard, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Lewis Williams, Baker, Mont.; George Bushard, Fairfax; Mrs. George Merritt, San Francisco, Calif.; Mrs. Donald Dumont, S. Pasadena, Calif.; Wilfred Bushard, New Ulm; Henry and Oster Bushard, Fairfax. Eleven grandchildren and thirty great grandchildren also survive, also one sister, Mrs. Joseph Mesme, of Los Angeles, Calif. Born in N.Y. State Mr. Bushard was born March 25, 1849, at Plattsburg, N.Y. and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. James Bushard. In 1861 he came to Minnesota from Vermont and for a time attended the St. Paul Cathedral school. Mr. Bushard was a versatile, and took a great interest in all things pertaining to agriculture. In later years he was greatly interested in the orchard on the Bushard farm in West Newton township. A devoted Catholic all his life, the funeral services were held Thursday at last week at St. Andrew's Catholic church at Fairfax. Burial was in the Catholic cemetery at St. George. Mr. Bushard for years was a member of the St. Josephs society at St. George and Fairfax.
