Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Vivian Christensen Mrs. Joseph Mattes (nee: Clara Dorn) Died May 10, 1921 Obituary appeared in unknown paper, May 18, 1921 Another unusually sad death occurred in this vicinity, last Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, when Mrs. Joseph Mattes, nee Clara Dorn, succumbed to consumption of the lungs at her farm home in West Newton township. As a result the husband has been deprived of the companionship of a loving helpmate and five small children have been robbed of a devoted mother's care. Mrs. Mattes suffered an attack of influenza last fall, from the after-effects of which she never fully recovered, and this led to the dread white plague. During January she was a patient at the Loretto Hospital here for a period of four weeks but in spite of the best medical attention and loving care, her condition gradually grew worse. She was confined to her bed for the past three months. Deceased was claimed by death in the flower of life. She was born in West Newton township, May 30, 1885, and was, therefore, 35 years, 11 months and 10 days old when the final summons came. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Dorn, were well-known residents of West Newton township for many years, until removing to their son's home near Gibbon, last fall. She was married at the Catholic church in St. George in June, 1911, to her surviving husband, besides whom she leaves five children, aged from one to nine years, her aged parents and the following 10 brothers and sisters to mourn her loss: Lambert Dorn, Brighton township; John H. Dorn, New Ulm; Anton and William Dorn, near Gibbon; Philip Dorn, Wisconsin; Ernest Dorn, West Newton; Mrs. Nick Morson, Mankato and the Misses Mary, Frances and Ella Dorn. Funeral services were conducted at the Catholic church in St. George, Thursday morning at 9:30 o'clock, and were largely attended, among those present being a goodly number of relatives and friends from New Ulm. The remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery near the church.
