WM. T. HAMMEL PASSES AWAY MONDAY Death came following several weeks of illness, Monday, Nov 22nd, at 2:30 P.M., to Mrs. William T. Hammel at her home in Center. Funeral services were held Thursday morning at 10:00 o'clock at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Center, Rev. William Moelter officiating. Burial was made in the local cemetery. Mary Hughes Hammel was born February 22nd, 1873 at LeSueur, Minn., and was married February 6th, 1893 at St. Peter, Minn., to William T. Hammel. They came to Oliver county in the early days and lived the balance of their lives here. Mr. Hammel passed away April 27th, 1937. Thirteen children were born to the union, all of whom survive both their parents. They are: Thomas and Clifford, Fairview, Mont.; Terrance, Medicine Lake, Mont.; Leo, Francis and Robert, Langdon, N.Dak.; Raymond, Mandan, N.Dak.; Mrs. D.F. Case, Cannon Falls, Minn.; Mrs. Dick Dressen, Marshall, Minn.; Mrs. Gladys Anderson, Mrs. Schumsky, Mrs. Earl Light and Miss Murial, all of Center. Mrs. Hammel is also survived by six sisters, Mrs. Ernie Wick, Cumberland, Wis.; Miss Elizabeth Hughes, Mankato, Minn.; Mrs. Tom Kiley, Minneapolis, Minn.; Miss Catherine Hughes, LeSueur, Minn.; Mrs. A.H. Louden, Bathgate, N. Dak.; and Mrs. C.P. Rice, Breckenridge, Minn.; and three brothers, James Hughes, LeSueur, Minn.; and George and Jay Hughes, Mankato, Minn. For the past 15 years, Mrs. Hammel has been confined to a wheel chair, following an attack of rheumatism which crippled her in such a way as to make it impossible for her to walk. At different times she has been confined to her bed, but at no time did she ever complain. The exemplification of all that is patient and cheerful, she accepted her lot with resignation and welcomed her family and friends to her home with a grace which befitted a well woman. During the years that she was rearing her family and when she was able to be about, no stranger was turned from her door and all were welcome to the hospitality of her home. The life of a woman like Mrs.Hammel, who lived it as she did, many times in pain, no doubt, of which she never spoke, puts before the living, an example of endurance and patience which is seldom found and which must be extolled to the place of highest things. To the surviving children, the entire community offers sympathy in the loss of their mother, who remained a devoted mother through extreme handicap and physical suffering." ========================================================================= Copyright Linda Miller 2006.
