PETER Frank P. Hughes who has served as clerk of court in Nicollet County since March,1937, died at the St. Peter hospital Sunday morning about 8:30, following an illness of seven weeks. He would have been 58 on November 25. Mr. Hughes was born at Lake Prairie, and had lived in St. Peter and vicinity all his life. He was appointed to the office of clerk of court in 1937, and was elected in 1937 and re-elected in 1942. Prior to holding office he operated a garage in St. Peter with his brother, the late Leo Hughes. He had been active in many civic affairs in St. Peter and Nicollet County. He served as secretary of the St. Peter association, president of the Golf club, grand knight of the Knights of Columbus, and was a member of the county fair board at the time of his death. He was active in the Sportsman's club, and had served as chairman of numerous committees on civic projects. Prior to serving as clerk of court, he had served as a member of the St. Peter city council. He had long been interested in sports, and in his earlier years was a baseball player. Surviving are his widow; two sons, Lieut. Robert F. Hughes, a flier in the marine air corps, Cherry Point, N.C., and Private Donald Hughes, in the army with an APO address whose present location is not known. Also surviving are four brothers, Matt of Duluth, Ray of Rochester, N.Y., Ed of Grand Forks, British Columbia, and Harry of Garden, Calif.; and one sister, Miss Laura Hughes of Hollywood, Calif. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 9:30 from St. Peter's church and burial was made at Calvary cemetery at St. Peter. ========================================================================= Copyright Linda Miller 2006.
