HUGHES (MATT) OBITUARY, Front Page with photo, Duluth Daily News-Tribune, Dec. 18, 1944 "MATT HUGHES IS DEAD AT 60 Martin T. (Matt) Hughes, 60, prominent in Duluth civic and business circles for 40 years, died yesterday in his home, 606 East Second street, after a lingering illness. Born near St. Peter, Minn., he left home in his 'teens to prospect for gold in the Rocky mountains from Colorado to Canada. Mr. Hughes came to Duluth when he was 20 years old, and worked as a cigar maker for about five years. Later he was employed by various meat-packing companies here, including George A. Hormel & Co., where he worked for 15 years. Four years ago he became active in the Grady & Hughes mortuary, after having been an inactive partner for nine years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Cathedral parish, Duluth council, Knights of Columbus, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Duluth Chamber of Commerce, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the United Commercial Travelers, Zenith Council and the Arrowhead Civic club. At one time he served as drum major of the Elks band. Survivors are a sister, Miss Laura Hughes, Hollywood, Calif., and three brothers, Harry J., Anaheim, Calif., Edward J., Grand Forks, British Columbia, and Ray, Rochester, N.Y. The recitation of the Rosary will be held at 8 p.m. today in Grady & Hughes funeral home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Sacred Heart Cathedral.
