Rose (1908) IRA TURNER (1817-1890) was one of the pioneer settlers of Elk township, in which he resided from 1872 until his death eighteen years later. Mr. Turner was born in Massachusetts May 1, 1817. Early in life he moved to Oswego county, N. Y., where he resided until his removal to Nobles county in 1872, being engaged in farming and other occupations. There he was married April 13, 1843, to Miss Sallie M. Myers, who died about 1878. Mr. Turner was a veteran of the civil war, having enlisted at Oswego, N. Y., in the 47th New York volunteers in 1862. He served fifteen months, taking part in the battle of Gettysburg and other noted, engagements. He came west in May, 1872, and took as a homestead claim the northwest quarter of section 18, Elk township. There he lived and engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death on Jan. 30, 1890.
