She grew up on the family farm, attended country school and graduated from Sheldon High School. She took her normal school teachers' training at Sheldon and taught country school for two years. On October 5, 1940, she and Lawrence J. Betz were married at Sheldon, Iowa. Following their marriage they farmed near Sheldon then near Sibley for several years. In 1950, they moved to a farm in Lime Lake Township near Avoca. They retired from farming in 1984 and moved to Slayton in 1989. Lawrence passed away on December 2, 2001. Lela moved to the Meadows Apartments in Worthington after Lawrence's death. She moved to the Slayton Manor Care Center in March 2004. After suffering a stroke she was a resident of the Sunset Cottage at Worthington for four days before passing away there on August 14, 2005, at the age of 86. She was a member of St. Ann's Church in Slayton and formerly St. Rose of Lima Cemetery in Avoca. She taught CCD at St. Ann's for many years and was a member of the W.C.C.W. She belonged to the Avoca Federated Women and had served on board of the Murray County Memorial Hospital. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, playing cards, handcrafts and spending 19 winters in Arizona. Survivors include four children and their spouses: Larry and Darlene Betz, Avoca; Judith and William Lange, Currie, MN; Leon and Judy Betz, Worthington; and Bibi Anna Spartz, Brewster, daughter-in-law Alyce Platt, Kasota, MN; 13 grandchildren: Stacy Pressley, Lisa Boynton, Jody Betz, Aaron Betz, Eugene Betz, Kimberly Betz, Jason Betz, Justin Betz, John Platt, Chad Spartz, Cory Spartz, Amber Spartz, and Breanna Spartz; eight great grandchildren: Alyssa Boynton, Darren Pressley, Bradley Pressley, Bryttney Platt, Cortney Platt, Darek Platt, Adam Betz and Natasha Betz; and one sister Darleen and her husband Clinton Bliss, Sheldon, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lawrence; son Kenneth Betz and son-in-law Lyle Spartz. Funeral services are at St. Ann's Church in Slayton, MN on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Patrick Arens officiating. The organist is Bibi Anna Spartz. The song leader is Lavina Fox. The pallbearers are all of her grandchildren. Interment is at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery Avoca, MN.
