ZISHKA, 79, of Worthington, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006, at Worthington Regional Hospital. Born Jan. 21, 1927, in Chicago, Ill., he was the son of Fred and Minnie Zwirn Zishka. He married Gladys Fields Aug. 14, 1949, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Worthington. He moved to Worthington at an early age and attended school. He joined the U.S. Army in 1945 and served with the Military Police in Korea. After marriage, they settled in Worthington. He worked for the City of Worthington for 35 years and retired as superintendent of the Water Department. He was a member of the Worthington Fire Department for 28 years and was very involved with first aid and rescue instruction. He was rescue squad captain for several years and was a professional rescue instructor for Minnesota. He taught several first aid classes for the City of Worthington, and the junior and senior high schools. He was a rescue instructor at Worthington Junior College and an EMT instructor. He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, the VFW and the American Legion in Worthington. Surviving are his wife; three sons, William (Maureen) Zishka, Owatonna, Thomas Zishka, Worthington, and Robert (Mary) Zishka, Mason City, Iowa; one brother, Fred Zishka, of Worthington; and five grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Benson Funeral Home, Worthington, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Worthington. The service will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Worthington, with the Rev. Robert Schulze and the Rev. Wayne Krohe officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Worthington Cemetery.
