Cemeteries With Life there is Death. Early settlers in this Community laid their members to rest near their homes or on the burial lot of relatives or friends. The first mention of burial among early records states 'a man named Holmes was buried in the burial ground on the Pattridge claim'. This is believed to have been on the Curtis A. Pattridge place just west of the village of Pleasant Grove. As older residents today mention burials 'were made in the grove to the west of the buildings on the Curtis Pattridge claim". Burials were also made on the knoll east of the village on the John Collins claim. Burgan Cemetery In 1858, three acres of land in south center of Section 22, to the north- east of the village of Pleasant Grove was purchased from William Burgan for a public cemetery. Known as the 'Burgan Cemetery', the location and distance from the village seemed to effect the desire of the community and burials continued on the Collins location. Only a few graves were used at the Burgan Cemetery. Discontinued after 1862, the location was officially closed April 12, 1915. In 1917, six graves were purchased in the Union Cemetery at Pleasant Grove for placement of remains from the Burgan Cemetery. Graves of the Overend, Flathers and others had been previously transferred. The 1917 transfer was made by Albert Decker, sexton, Board members, A.D. Erhard, C.H. Brewster, J.W. Kendall and C.I. Denny. It is recalled that in some instances the wide solid black walnut board used by S.J. Smith, casket maker at Pleasant Grove, was well preserved and was moved with the remains. The Burgan Cemetery property was sold December 14, 1923 to Thomas Towey. Today it is included in the thirty-nine acres owned by J. Edwin Yates. Union-Evergreen Cemetery March 19, 1864, ten men of the community: John Collins, David Overend, P.H. Parks, E.W. Cole, Noble Cuyle, Joseph Yates, James Pace, N. Stowe and A.C. Sparks met at the school house in the village of Pleasant Grove to form a Cemetery Association. John Collins was appointed Chairman, F.W. Cole, Secretary. Six men were appointed Trustees: John Collins, David Overend, P.H. Parks, Fredrick Sibeck and Noble Cuyle. Election of Trustees to be held the last Saturday in December of each year at 2:00 o'clock in afternoon. Subsequently named the 'Union Cemetery Association'. Land was purchased from John Collins to include burials previously made on his property located in the northeast one-fourth of the southeast one-fourth of Section 28.
