DODGE PASSES AWAY SUDDENLY IN TAMPA, FLORIDA From Saturday's Daily Rochester people received a shock this morning when they learned that Elam P. Dodge had died at Tampa, Fla., where he had gone but a few weeks ago on a pleasure trip. During the week rumours had come from the south that the condition of the Roch- ester man was none too satisfactory, but it did not seem possible that he was to be so soon removed from the scene of his early activities, and con- sequently the sad tidings that he is no more, brot (SIC) poignant grief to the many who knew this whole-souled gentleman. Friday the Bulletin was apprised by wire from Florida, that Mr. Dodge was a very sick man. During the night a telegram which read as follows, was filed at Tampa, Fla.: E. P. Dodge of Rochester was oper- ated on Friday afternoon at the Gor- don Keller Hospital, Tampa, for an ul- cer to the rear of the right eye and in front of the brain. Friday night his condition became precarious and Dr. J. B. Farrior, who performed the op- eration, stated that the condition of the patient was such as is similar fol- lowing other operations of this char- acter. Patients are always in dan- ger." Then this morning came the tele- gram which told the worst to those who were eagerly hoping that Mr. Dodge had passed the crisis and that he would soon be on the way to com- plete recovery. Mr. Dodge went to the hospital in the Florida city two weeks ago, short- ly after arriving there from Rochester. He was accompanied on his southern trip by Mrs. Dodge and by Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Drips. Mrs. Dodge was a guest at the Hills- boro hotel in Tampa during her hus- band's illness. Elam P. Dodge was born in Roch- ester on December 2, 1867. He spent his entire life here. In Rochester he received his education, in Rochester he grew to manhood, and in Roch- ester, when he was still a youth, he became associated with his father, the late W. H. Dodge, in the lumber and fuel business. He was distinctly a Rochester product. During only one year of his life was he absent from the Queen City, and that year he sent out west. On June 1, 1892, he married Miss Alice Bennett, the ceremony taking place at Simpson. Mrs. Dodge and one son, Walter, survive, and to them is extended the heartfelt sympathy of the community. Mr. Dodge's father died Feb. 19, 1907, and his mother passed away Nov. 12, 1913. Elam P. Dodge was a citizen who be- lieved in serving his fellows to the best of his ability. Tho a busy mer- chant, he consented to sacrifice his time for a term on the Board of Ed- ucation and two terms on the city coun- cil. His abilities were recognized on these bodies by his associates and fre- quently the quality of the services which he rendered, was commented upon by them and by others who were in a position to know Mr. Dodge's w real worth. Taken in the prime of life with years of usefulness before him, his death is in the nature of a calamity to this city, for it can ill afford to lose men of Mr. Dodge's stamp.
