Nels had a croquet set and the family had many games on the lawn. He was one of the businessmen who started the movement to get a lighted baseball park for the community team. He was president of the baseball club for seven years, and he never missed a game if he could help it. He was assessor in Hinckley for four years, was parade chairman of the Korn and Klover Karnival for ten years and he built floats every year. He was a 50-year member of the Hinckley Odd Fellows Lodge and at one time was Grand Master of the State of Minnesota. Nels retired from the store in 1958 and they traveled through all parts of the US and Canada and even made a trip to Mexico. He died in 1976, the day before their 65th wedding anniversary. Anna lived 3 years more, with a broken heart. They had 4 children, 13 grandchildren, and 33 great- grandchildren.
