This is a copy of her first teaching contract made 2 months before she turned 18... "TEACHER'S CONTRACT: This Agreement, Made this 18th day of March, 1932, between School District No. 1 in the County of Pine and State of Minnesota, by the School Board, at a meeting called for that purpose Yes and Lavina Swendsen a legally qualified teacher. WITNESSETH, That the said Lavina Swendsen shall teach the school in said district for the term of 8 months, for the sum of 520.00 Dollars per month, commencing on the 5 day of Sept 1932. And the said_______ agrees faithfully to teach the said school according to the best of her ability, and to keep a register of the daily attendance of each pupil belonging to the schoool, and make such reports of the school as is or may be required by law or by the County Superintendent, or by the State Department of Education, and to observe and enforce all rules and regulations established by proper authority for the government and management of said school, and use her apparatus and furniture thereto belonging, and also all books and records provided by the School Board for the use of said school, and to deliver the same to the clerk of said district at the close of said term of school in as good condition as when received, natural wear and tear excepted. The said School Board hereby agrees to keep the school house and premises in good repair, provide suitable and sufficient fuel prepared for fire, and supply necessary school equipment and supplies: IT IS FURTHER AGREED, Between the School Board and the said teacher: FIRST.--In respect to janitor work,sweepig and keeping the school room clean:_________(nothing filled in) SECOND.--With respect to vacations during the school year: Christmas and Easter. THIRD.--With respect to holidays:_______(nothing filled in) FOURTH.--That the teacher shall arive(sic)at the school house, each school day, in time and remain long enough to perform all sevices herin agreed upon, and not late that 8 A. M. and to remain until 430 P. M. FIFTH.--This contract is subject to all the provisions of the Teachers' Insurance and Retirement Fund Law. Chapter 199, General laws of 1915. The district also agrees to pay the said Lavina Swendsen for the above named services the sum of Sixty Five Dollars in monthly payments of Sixty Five Dollars at the end of each school month, but the last only when all reports have been properly made.
