William Spicer, 79, passed away at the Brainerd home of a daughter Friday, March 20, after having suffered from cancer of the face for the past year. Mr. Spicer had been afflicted with the malady that caused his death for the past several years and had submitted to several operations with only temporary relief being enjoyed. Mrs. Spicer had passed away in Dec. 28, 1928, thus terminating a happy union of 55 years. Since that time Mr. Spicer had made his home with his children. William Harrison Spicer was born July 8, 1852, in New York state coming to Minnesota in 1865 when he made his home at Mazeppa where he and later married Arina Davis on Dec. 31, 1873. To their union eight children were born, Mrs. Valerie Sheldon, Conrad, Mont., (unable to attend funeral); the Rev. Claude Spicer, Browns Valley, Minn.; Mrs. Pearl Heil, Theilman, Minn.; Lanklyn and William of Faribault; Mrs. Zela Spicer, St. Paul; Mrs. Evelena Peters, Brainerd and Mrs. Nannie Ballor, Manistique, Mich. The deceased resided at various places during his lifetime in-landed* among them being Mazeppa where he lived after coming from New York state until 1879 when he moved to Atkinson, Nebr. From there he returned to Mazeppa in 1894 and in 1902 he came to farm in Pine Lake township where he lived until Mrs. Spicer’s death at which time he broke up house-keeping and took up residence with his children. The deceased was a member of the Gospel Union creed and was an esteemed member of a large circle of friends. Besides his children two sisters, Mrs. Clarissa Davis of Newport, Neb.; Mrs. Sarah Port of Swan River, this state; 48 grandchildren survive. The funeral was held from the Methodist church in Finlayson cemetery, the Rev. John A. Hughes of Sandstone, spoke the funeral sermon and three sons, the Rev. Claude Spicer, Lanklyn and William Spicer acted as pallbearers with Lloyd Spicer, grandson and Ray Alloway and Everett Vork. Besides other relatives in attendance the following grandchildren from away were at the funeral; Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Spicer and Mr. and Mrs. Everett Vork of Sandstone; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Alloway of Minneapolis and Miss Helen Peters of Brainerd.
