Bennett, of LeMars, was in town on Monday, on his way to Pipestone City, and from him we gather some facts of interest concerning that region. Mr. B. has made investments at Pipestone, and will spend most of his time there during the summer. He has a claim abutting on the Quarry, and hopes in due time to quarry quite a quantity of this unique stone, the only stone of the kind, we understand, in the world. Mr. Bennett informs us the settlement at Pipestone City is growing. There are some 15 families there. D. E Sweet is postmaster, keeps a hotel and locates parties on public lands. John Lowry has a building up and a stock of groceries on the way. There are 50 acres of cuttings growing, and about 150 - 200 acres of crops in good condition. Forty-three timber claims and 35 homestead and pre-emption claims have been taken in Pipestone County, most of them this year. D. E. Sweet, C. H. Bennett and W. J. Taylor, on Monday and Tuesday, the 5th and 6th inst., located and mounded a direct road from Pipestone City to connect with our northwest road. A joint petition is being circulated for the location of a mail route on said line. The distance to Pipestone City from Worthington by this direct line is about 46 miles. We look forward to the time, in the near future, when Worthington will draw considerable trade from Pipestone and Murray Counties. And when the Southern Minnesota builds the branch norwest to Pipestone City, we expect to see the beautiful pipestone used largely for windown and door caps, mantles, etc., in the city of Worthington.
