Herman John Arp was born January 24, 1872 at Keil, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 
to Johann Christian Arp and Carolina Lena Wolgelhagen Schoel. He was the third 
of six children, his siblings were: Henry Claudius, Emma Dorothea, Otto 
Chritian, Carl William and Richard Bernard. 

He emigrated with family from Hamburg, Germany to New York, USA March 25, 1885. 
Ship name: Gellert; Shipping Line: Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien 
Gesellschaft; Ship type: Dampfschiff; Accommodation: Zwischendeck.

Herman married Anna Katherina Krutzfeldt on March 7, 1896 at Tama, IA. 
They had 3 children: 
John Christian (born June 13, 1896 Tama, IA, married Anna Amanda Rath September 
3, 1919 Luverne, Rock, MN, died July 8, 1976 Pipestone, MN); 

Laura Margarethe (born March 10, 1898 Tama, IA, married Theodore Hans Oye 
September 5, 1916 Pipestone, MN, died March 13, 1986 Pipestone, MN) and 

Louise Caroline (born April 5, 1904 Pipestone, MN, married Frank Frederick 
Brockberg December 6, 1922 Pipestone, died October 10, 1994 Pipestone, MN). 

Herman John Arp died Nov 3, 1955 at Pipestone, MN. and was buried at the Trosky 
Cemetery, Trosky, Pipestone, MN.

Found in the 1895 census at Oneida, Tama, IA: Herman John Arp age 22.

Obituary in the Pipestone, Minnesota, County Star Newspaper: 
Herman John Arp, longtime resident of Trosky, Minn., passed away at the 
Flandreau Rest Home on Thursday, Nov. 3rd, 1955, following a lingering illness. 
He had been at the Rest home for about five weeks. The body was brought to the 
Walz & Geise Funeral Home in Pipestone, Minn. 

Services were held this Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church 
in Trosky, with Rev. L. H. Klaus of Pipestone in charge. Mrs. Ray Christian was 
the organist and Mrs. Stanley Ferguson the vocalist. 

The burial was in the Trosky cemetery and six grandsons were the bearers: 
Vincent and Oren Oye, Myron Arp, and Harvey, Melvin, and Ivan Brockberg. The 
late 

Mr. Arp was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge. Herman John Arp was born in 
Holstein, Germany, near Kiel, on January 24, 1872, and was past 83 years of age 
at the time of his death. He came to the U.S. in 1885 and settled in Scott 
County, Iowa. On March 7, 1896, he married Anna Krutzfeldt and the couple lived 
in Iowa until 1900, when they moved to Trosky, Minnesota. 

The death of Mrs. Arp occurred on December 4, 1939. Mr. Arp and family resided 
in the Trosky area for many years and in 1949, he moved into Trosky and had 
since made his home there. 

He is survived by one son, John of Pipestone; two daughters, Mrs. Frank 
(Louise) Brockberg, Pipestone, and Mrs. Theo (Laura) Oye, Sioux Falls; 14 
grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Emma Lorenzen, of 
Pipestone." 

Iowa newspaper: "HERMAN J. ARP, 83, DIES IN MINNESOTA; FORMERLY OF NORTH TAMA" 
A company of Tama county relatives including Mrs. Richard Arp, and her son 
Walter and wife; Jurgen Jebe, of Dysart; John Arp of Traer; Mrs. Wilbur 
Krutzfeldt, of Elberon; and Norma Garbers, of Van Horne, Iowa, were at Trosky, 
Minn., attending funeral services for Henry John Arp, 83. Mr. Arp was a former 
resident of north Tama. 

Mr. Arp had accompanied his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Christian Arp, to Iowa, from 
the old country in 1885. After a year living in Scott County, Iowa, they came 
to Tama County, settling in Oneida township. The son, Herman, married Anna 
Krutzfeldt in Tama county, March 7, 1896. The first four years of their 
marriage was spent in the Dysart community. In 1900, they moved to southwestern 
Minnesota, farming near Trosky and Pipestone many years. After Mrs. Arp died, 
Herman retired in Trosky.
