Newspaper article from Pipestone County Star, October 2, 1923: YOUNG MAN VICTIM OF FATAL ACCIDENT HERE - Willie Knuth Electrocuted Saturday Evening - Car Struck Street Light Post A fatal accident occurred in this city Saturday evening, the victim being Willie J. Knuth, a young man from near Lake Benton, who was electrocuted when the automobile which he was driving, struck and broke off one of the electric light posts in the center of Main Street. The accident happened during the heavy fall of rain shortly after nine o'clock. Unable to see his way because of the rain, Knuth ran his Ford roadster against the street lighting post located at about the center of the block between Olive and Catlin streets. The upper part of the post came crashing to the street, and the car stopped with the front axle resting upon the stub of the light post which was still standing. The machine came in contact with the electric light wires. Knuth got out of the car apparently uninjured and people in nearby houses saw him go around behind the car and afterwards approach the left side of the machine, evidently with the purpose of trying to pull it back off the post. When he touched the fender, there was a flash and Knuth fell in the street. Neighborhood people reached him within seconds. He was carried onto the boulevard and at that time showed signs of life, his limbs moving. He was moved to the front porch at the C.D. Duffus residence, 121 S. Main St., and physicians were summoned, a call also being sent in for the Fire Dept. 1st Aid Corps, with their lung motor. The physicians could find no sign of life. As a last resort, the lung motor was brought into use, and was operated for about two hours but with no avail. Willie Knuth was a son of Mr. & Mrs. John Knuth, residents of Trosky, Minn. The young man recently had been working as a farm hand near Lake Benton. His remains were taken to Trosky yesterday, and it is understood that the funeral will be held there this afternoon. He had reached the age of 26 years, 9 months, 12 days. He was unmarried. He had quite a number of friends in Pipestone, by whom he was held in high regard, and the accident is deeply deplored by the entire community. Find A Grave Memorial #61033547.
