Born Jan. 12, 1937, in Pipestone County, She was the daughter of John and Margaret Schelhaas De Kam. She married Lloyd Van Essen Feb. 18, 1955 in Edgerton. She was raised in Pipestone County and attended Edgerton Christian Elementary School in Edgerton. After marriage, they lived and farmed west of Edgerton. She also worked as a nurse's aid at the hospital in Pipestone. In the fall of 1978, they moved off the farm and into Edgerton. She was a lifetime member of First Christian Reformed Church, Edgerton, where she was an active member of the Christian Fellowship Group. She was a cancer survivor since being diagnosed in April 1986. She volunteered at Edgebrook Care Center in Edgerton. They traveled in the winter to California and Texas. Surviving are her husband; three daughters, Marilyn (Jim) Van Santen, Luverne; LeAnne (Glen) Schoolmeester, Chandler; Karla (Lyle) Schiebout, Trosky; four brothers, Arnold (Faye) De Kam, Mountain Grove, MO; John De Kam, Sioux Falls, SD; Harold (Martha) De Kam, Edgerton; Elmer (Hennie) De Kam, Edgerton; two sisters, Nelvina De Kam, and Marlys (John) Bouw, both of Leota; nine grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Colonial Funeral Home, Edgerton. The service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Reformed Church, Edgerton.
