Sorby The Thirteen Towns, 7/30/1915, p1 One of the pioneers of this section of the state, few citizens of his home community have been as well known as Hans C. Sorby, who died last Sunday the 25th at his home is Hill River, from heart failure. The departed came from Norway in 1883, the year the Thirteen Towns were opened to settlement, and has made Hill River his home from that time until his death. His birthplace was Jyperpen, Norway. Before coming to this country and engaging in farming he followed the calling of a sailor for twelve years and visited the ports of many eastern countries. Both his father and mother died after coming to this country. Nine years ago Mr. Sorby was married to Manett Paulson, a daughter of Nicoli Paulson, of Eden. His wife and five children survive him, two boys and three girls, Melvin, Christopher, Helga, Alvina and Selma. Three brothers, Andrew, Louis, and Christian, are residents of Hill River, and one sister, Mrs. Christian Olson, lives in Eden Township. Mr. Sorby was in his 64th year, a member of the Salem Synod Lutheran church and the funeral will be held tomorrow - Saturday - afternoon, from the residence at 2 o'clock and service in the above church at 2:30, with interment in Salem cemetery. The family and other relatives have the universal sympathy of the community in their deep bereavement over the loss of one who will be greatly missed in the district where he has made his home for half of his lifetime. A sturdy, respected citizen, he has labored industriously and prospered. ========================================================================= Copyright Joy Paulson 2006.
