Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Kathryn Kelly This file lists the inhabitants, as enumerated in the 1885 Minnesota census, of an orphanage in St. Paul, Mn. This orphanage appears in Ward 3, Schedule 57, household numbers 22 and 23. This census does not give addresses, so the St. Paul City Directory was used to attempt to determine the identity of this orphanage. Nearby residences were listed in the 100's on West 9th. The nearest orphanage to these residences was St. Joseph's (German) Orphan Asylum run by Rev. Valentine Stimmler and Sister Benedict. The first name in the list is Martha Benedict, followed by 5 first names of Lester. These are probably census taker errors for 'Mother' and 'Sister'. It appears that the census taker may also have erred on the sex of two of the sisters. And household 26 which closely follows the orphanage lists names similar to the names listed for the parish priests associated with the orphanage. Note: Names of the inhabitants need to be looked at with scrutiny. Obviously, it appears that the census taker made errors with the priests and nuns, so names of the children may not be totally correct either. >From the St. Paul City Directory, 1885-1886 St. Joseph's (German) Orphan Asylum 199 W.
