FileFormatted by Terri--MNArchives Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Bob Kuehn ========================================================================= The following is an obit for my father, Herb Kuehn, who was born in Clements and spent his childhood in Willow Lake/Wanda. --------- Herbert W. Kuehn, 94, Sparta, died July 23, 2000, at the Morrow Memorial Home in Sparta. Herbert William Kuehn was born in Clements, Minnesota, on May 3, 1906, the son of Otto and Minnie (Altermatt) Kuehn. He was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Willow Lake Township, not far from Wanda, Minnesota. Most of his childhood years were spent with his grandparents, Frank and Frieda (Schneider) Altermatt. He was confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Springfield, Minnesota. He attended Dr. Martin Luther High School in New Ulm, Minnesota, where he first met his future wife, Florence Waterman. In 1928, both Herb and Florence graduated from Dr. Martin Luther College, qualified as Lutheran elementary school teachers. On July 7, 1929, Herb was married to Florence Waterman at Zion Ev. Lutheran Church at Sanborn, Minnesota, by Pastor Shierenbeck. Herb taught at St. John's Lutheran School in Sparta, Wisconsin, from 1928-1936. For most of those years, the school was located in the basement of the old church. There were 40 children in his classroom in his first year, all eight grades. The number of children in his one-room classroom increased substantially over the years, reaching 84 at one point. During his last year of teaching when the enrollment went over 90, the congregation at St. John's rented the old Northwest Primary School building and called his wife Florence to help out. He was a full-time organist during his teaching years, and was available as a substitute organist for many years thereafter. He was the very first organist at St. John's that was able to play the foot pedals. After his teaching years, he remained a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church, sang in the choir, was church treasurer, and served on various boards and committees. For a few years he worked for the old Monroe County Bank of Sparta. Eventually, he received an Accounting Degree and established his own bookkeeping and accounting service, which he continued with until his retirement Herb was an avid golfer. He won several City Championships at the Sparta course and on three occasions scored a hole-in-one. The last time he played golf was with his son Bob on May 3 of this year, his 94th birthday. A few years ago, Florence needed additional nursing care, which was available at the Morrow Home. Shortly after, Herb moved in so that he could be with her. Employees at the Morrow Home remember him for his sense of humor and how he helped take care of Florence. The family wishes to thank the many staff members at the Morrow Home for their love and care. He was a wonderful father, a great husband. He was a teacher, a musician, an athlete. He served as President of the Rotary Club, Secretary and Honorary Lifetime Member of the Chamber of Commerce, and sang in the Sparta Barbershop Chorus that he helped organize. Herb and Florence loved to travel by car; their trips took them throughout most of the United States. In his later years, he especially enjoyed looking at photographs and reminiscing about old times. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of nearly 70 years, Florence, who passed away on February 16, 1999; two brothers, Elmer Kuehn and Eldon Kuehn; and two sisters, Evelyn Merriman and Myrtle Nadolny. He is survived by his daughter, Jan (Dan) Moszyk of Overland Park, Kansas; his son, Bob Kuehn, of Madison, Wisconsin;three grandchildren, Kim (Mark) Coats of Raymore, Missouri; Paul (Teri) Moszyk of Olathe, Kansas; and Danielle Moszyk of Washington, D.C.;two great-grandchildren, Alexis and Gabrielle Moszyk; one brother, Ken Kuehn of Tucson, Arizona; and two sisters, Dorothy Anderson of Seattle, Washington, and Norma Bergherr of Beaverton, Oregon. ---------
