A funeral mass was held at Church of the Holy Name in Vesta, Minnesota, on September 18, 1969 at 11 a.m. Father Edward Stone was the celebrant and burial was at Our Lady of Victory Cemetery in Lucan, Minnesota. Sylvester Valerius Zitzmann was born in Lucan on January 28, 1919, a son of Joseph F. and Rose Zitzmann. He graduated from Milroy High School in 1936 and enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corp at Ely, Minnesota. He then moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he worked until entering the Army in January, 1942. Sylvester was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, 32nd Red Arrow Division ("Les Terribles"), Company E, 127th Infantry Regiment and attained the rank of sergeant. He was in the Papuan Campaign and the New Guinea Campaign, where he was shot in the shoulder, causing paralysis of the right forearm and hand. He was hospitalized for two years as a result of his wounds and awarded a Purple Heart and other badges and medals. He was discharged from the Army in December, 1944. Sylvester married Dorothy Margaret Kramer on June 25, 1946, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Seaforth, Minnesota. They lived near Clements and in 1949 moved to Vesta, where he started Zitzmann Roofing and Siding Company. He became Vesta Postmaster in 1958. Sylvester was a member of the Vesta Volunteer Fire Department and the Vesta Commercial Club, and a director of the Seaforth Beneficial Society. He also managed the Vesta Ball Club and enjoyed helping neighbors with home improvements. Sylvester and Dorothy had three children, including two sons, Darcy (1948) and Richard (1952), who died in infancy. ____________________ Compiler's note: The 32nd Division was made up of units from Wisconsin and Michigan. The division was short eight men, so Sylvester and others from Minnesota were attached to the division.
