I am a charter member of the Renville County Genealogical Society and a charter member of the Sacred Heart Area Historical Society and Museum. Members of RCGS walked the cemeteries in Renville County from 1985 until 1992 and we have now published 3 volumes which include maps and names of persons listed on the tombstones with the location in our county cemeteries. These are titled: "Index to Cemeteries of Renville Co., MN Vol 1 Bandon-Crooks" (104 pg) "Index to Cemeteries of Renville Co., MN Vol 2 Emmet-Preston Lake (101 pg) "Index to Cemeteries of Renville Co., MN Vol 3 Sacred Heart-Winfield (82 pg) The books list the cemeteries alphabetically by township. These booklets are copyrighted by RCGS and are our fundraiser to keep our library in Renville (within the Renville City Library) available to researchers who travel here from all over the U.S. and even from other countries to conduct their family research. The books are for sale for $20.00 each. We have also have published Indexes: 1888 Plat Book for Renville County 1900 Plat Book for Renville County 1913 Plat Book for Renville County 1898 Plat Book for Redwood County These research booklets were created to raise funds for our Society. The Plat Book indexes include reproductions of township and village maps. I have the Index of the 1888 Plat Book here among my resources and it consists of 98 pages. The Plat book indexes are available from RCGS for $15.00 each. Completing this project took most of our available time during the past few years. We continue to serve family researchers who visit in our library or write to us. We have an "Experience Works" employee who helps us with the library and keeping up with the many queries that are sent to us each year. We also publish the newsletter "Geneline" four times a year in the months of February, May, September and November. Membership in our society is currently $12.00 per calendar year ($15.00 outside the USA). Membership should be mailed to: RCGS P.O. Box 331 Renville, MN 56284 Please check with the society (RCGS) for possible cost changes. http://ci.renville.mn.us/rcgs/ ******************************************************************************* Looking through the contributions to the USGenWeb Archives for Renville County, specifically the information on churches and cemeteries in the Sacred Heart area, I found a discrepancy that only someone living in this area would notice. In Wang township, the chapel listed as "Vesper Song" is incorrectly named. The name should be "Vestre Sogn" which is the Norwegian for "West District". Our Savior's Lutheran Church (in the city of Sacred Heart) is the mother church of the Norwegian Lutheran churches in the area around Sacred Heart. The first resident pastor (Pastor Johannes E. Bergh) traveled a radius of 20 miles in all directions from his home to serve all the people in the parish. As the community grew, small rural congregations were formed and churches built. They were known as "West District" or "East District". The "Vestre Sogn" church burned in a storm around 1913, and the chapel was built later. Another church was built in Wang township and named "Wang Lutheran Church". ******************************************************************************* I hope this information will be of help to researchers who have had ancestors originating in Renville County.
