FileFormatted by Terri--MNArchives Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Barbara Pierce Submitted: June 1999 ========================================================================= 1860's (late) - Settlers from Bohemia came to the Bechyn area. 1868 - The first celebration of Mass was held in Henryville by Father Sommereisen, St. Mary's Catholic Church of Bechyn. 1868 (June 16) - Thomas Henry Barkey was the first child born in the township, son of the T H. Barkeys. 1869 - The first religious services were held by the Catholics. 1869 (January) - Thomas Garity was the first death in the township. He was frozen with several others. 1871 (March 16) - Henryville Township was organized. The township was originally a part of Beaver Falls Township. Henryville took its name from Peter Henry, one of the best-known pioneer settlers. 1871 (March 28) - First election was held at the home of Robert Nickolson. Officers elected: supervisors, John Swoboda, chairman, James Holden, and F. M. Carlson; clerk and assessor, T. H. Barkey; treasurer, L. G. Moore; justices, Joseph Sharp and James Greeley; constables, Henry Seely and David Smith; road overseers, James Holden and F. M. Carlson. 1873 - By 1873 twenty families had arrived from the district of Bechyn in Bohemia and had taken up residence in the present township of Henryville. One of the earliest settlers was the John Swoboda and Jacob Krell families. 1879 (about) - Swoboda and Krell each donated five acres of land for a new church, St. Mary's Catholic Church of Bechyn. 1880 - Construction on St. Mary's Catholic Church of Bechyn began. 1882 - St. Philip's Catholic Church was incorporated. A church building was constructed in the northern part of the township. The parish members later joined the Bechyn and Olivia churches and the building was sold and moved away. 1883 - St. Mary's Catholic Church of Bechyn was completed. Soon after the church was moved. The cemetery at Henryville remains. 1899 - Henryville Post Office was established in the home of Dr. Henry Schoregge, postmaster. 1915 - The present Church of St. Mary was built.
