M. Barns and George Brent. 1873 - The first claims in the township were filed by William Chalk and Thomas Torbenson. 1874 - Claims were filed by Winfield Jones and James Smith. 1875 - By 1875 School District #71 had grades up through grade four. 1878 - Martinsburg Township was organized. The township was named after Martin Grummons; his father was W. F. Grummons, a member of the Board of County Commissioners. 1878 (November 5) - Records of the first election in Martinsburg Township was held at the home of John Mohan. 1881 - A special meeting was called to prepare for Small Pox, should they occur. 1892 - The town hall was built. Prior to the building of the town hall, meetings were held in homes paying the owner $1.00. 1892 (October 11) - Bonds were issued to finance School District #113. The first teacher was Nora Quigley. 1923 - From the beginning of the township records until 1923, forty percent of the deaths were of children under two years of age.
