Brown stone house was built. 1862 (about) - One of the first white men in the township after the Indian outbreak of 1862 was Thomas Olsen Kolien (now spelled Collin). 1865 - G. P. Greene settled in the township before the Scandinavian colony arrived. Mr. Greene was a prominent man in the township and he was the first postmaster of Minnesota Crossing. 1866-1868 - Many settlers came from Opdal, Numedal, Norway to make their home in what is Sacred Heart, Hawk Creek, Wang and Ericson Townships of Renville County. 1868 (late) - The first schoolhouse was erected in the township, Section 5. Mr. Greene was the first school teacher for several years. 1869 (April 6) - The first town election was held at the house of G. P. Greene. His small log house was the town center up to 1876. Officers chosen: S. Brooks (Chm.), Ole Johnson and P. G. Peterson, supervisors; G. P. Greene, clerk; Ole B. Dahl, assessor; Ole O. Enestvedt, treasurer; P. R. Brooks and G. P. Greene, justices; J. P. Okins, constable. Also at this meeting, the name Sacred Heart was given to the new township. 1871 - A grasshopper plague struck the settlement and lasted for 3 years. 1891 - The Opdal Congregation was organized.
