Wm. J. Laurence Who Enlisted Early in The War Was Killed October 6th. Mrs. L.C. Habel, from north of Renville, received a telegram a few days ago saying that her brother had been killed in action in France, Oct. 6th, 1918. William J. Laurence was born near Silver Lake, McLeod county on October 20th, 1890, and about six years later moved with his parents to Hector where he lived for a number of years, and 14 years ago moved to Minneapolis where he lived a number of years. Eight years ago he came to Renville where he worked for Mr. John Hassell, and made his home with Mrs. Habel, his sister. During the Mexican trouble on the border he enlisted and served the time his regiment was there. A short time after he was home re re-enlisted and was sent to Nogales, Arizona being assigned to the 35th U.S. Inf. From there he was sent to Hoboken, N.J. and landed in France some time in July 1917 when he was transferred to the 453 Hq. 18th Inf. He leaves to mourn his loss, a father, Leo Laurence,of Renville, Minn., three brothers, Leo and Claude of Minneapolis nad Edward who is in France and seven sisters, Mrs. F.J. Macheldt of Hector, Mrs. L.C. Hable, Renville, Mrs. W.E. O'Conner, Granite Falls, Mrs. Geo. Schmidt of Stewart, Mrs. Peter Blair, Mrs. William Coleman and Mrs. Geo. Thompson of Canada. Wm. Laurence enlisted under the name of Zola G. Hassell and served under that name as corporal unitl August 1917 when he was promoted to sergeant and served until his death.
