JESSE HARMER "Mrs. Jesse Harmer, a resident of Northfield Community for forty years, passed away quietly in her sleep Thursday morning, May 6, at her home, 109 West Ninth Street, at the age of eighty-three years. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Zanmiller Funeral Home with the Rev. L. H. Klaus conducting the service. Mrs. Klaus and Mrs. G. O. Karnes sang "One Sweetly Solemn Thought" and "Abide With Me," accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Chester Fox. Burial was made in Oaklawn cemetery. Pallbearers were Donald Lloyd, Roy Harmer, C. W. Zimmerman, Clarence Kolstad, Arthur Bruce and Ben Hanson. Ida Todd, daughter of Robert and Sarah Todd, was born September 3, 1860, at Paris Indiana. Early in life she came with her parents to live at Ottawa, Minn., where she followed educational interests until the time of her marriage. On March 27, 1878, she was married at the home of her parents in Ottawa to Jesse Harmer of Claremont, Minn. Less than two months ago, Mr. and Mrs. Harmer celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary at their home in Northfield with the children present, the dinner and preparations being the work of Mrs. Harmer herself. After their marriage in 1878 Mr. and Mrs. Harmer went to live on a farm at Claremont. Here they resided for six years then moving to Le Sueur County for three years, then to Waterville and coming to Northfield in 1903. In this community they made their home for ten years on a farm in Greenvale township, retiring in 1913 and living for thirty years in Northfield. Mrs. Harmer is survived by her husband, Jesse Harmer; four children, Otto of Northfield, Rollo of Le Center, Mrs. Martin Ellingboe (Lillian) of St. Paul, and Effa Vivian Eide of Minneapolis; a sister, Mrs. Ada Loree of Mankato, and four grandchildren. A daughter preceded her mother in death at five years of age and a son, Milo, at the age 28. Mrs. Harmer was an active member of the Town and Country club and the Methodist church and it's Woman's Society of Christian Service. She was one of the hostesses of her own group only three weeks ago. She was a woman of versatile interests and activity and proved herself an excellent mother and a faithful wife. In earlier years she gave wide expression to the storehouse of poetry she loved and which she had committed an unusual amount to memory. Her spirit of victory and adventure, which would not even entertain the thought of defeat or despair, tho she had much experience and affliction which could so easily have discouraged her, was her predominating characteristic. She was the embodiment of the true Christian spirit of victory and mastery of life and circumstance. She was never the victim but always the victor and master of whatever troubles befell her." (ERROR: Ida's daughter Effa Vivian Eide should be ESSA.) (Source: Northfield News 5/13/43)
