Submitted by: Steve Schack e-mail: sschack@uswest.net Appeared in the Jordan Independent on Thursday, April 8, 1909 WILLIAM SCHLOESSER LIVED ALMOST A CENTURY Wm. Schloesser of St. Joe Died Saturday At The Age of 97 Years One of the oldest, if not actually the oldest, of our Scott County residents, departed for that bourne whence there is no returning, Saturday evening, when William Schloesser of St. Joe died. Mr. Schloesser, so far as we know, possessed the unique distinction of being the oldest man in Scott County the time death called him, almost reaching the age of 97 years, He was in good and rugged health always, practically up to his last hour, for his final illness with pneumonia was only of a short duration. He was one of St. Joe's early settlers coming to the community in the year 1855 and carving out a home for himself from amid the big woods. During his late years, himself and wife made their home with their son Frank, of St. Joe. He was born in Neuenkirchen, Koln, Germany, July 18, 182 and after living for a span of forty years in the land of his fathers, decided to come to America, the land of promise, landing on our shores on Oct. 2, 1852. On Jan. 7, 1853 he was married to Elizabeth Heimann at St. Louis, Mo., the union being a most happy one for 56 years, for she lives to survive him. In 1855 the couple came to Scott County, which place has been their home ever since. Besides his wife, Mr. Schloesser is survived by two sons, Jos. and Frank, of St. Joe and five daughters, Mrs. John Vonbank of Jordan, Mrs. Katie Koch, Mrs. John N. Vonbank, and Mrs. Henry Wick of St. Joe and Mrs. Frank Wolf of Benedict. The funeral took place from St. Joseph's Catholic church, yesterday morning at 10 o'clock and was very largely attended. ---------
