He grew from boyhood to manhood while he was engaged with a nobleman as a carriage driver and traveled with his master through most of the ports of Germany. In 1835 he was married to Wilhelmine Betting and their union was blessed with eight children, all being boys. William is a well to do farmer and rancher in Eastern Oregon; Charles was formerly engaged in farming in this vicinity but has retired and is now a resident of this village; Gustavus resides on a farm a few miles west of Arlington; Fernal resides in Henderson; Henry J. is engaged in the hardware business in Oregon; John resided and died in California. The remainder of the children died before emigration to America. He leaves 62 grand and great-grand children. He and his family left Prussia, Germany, and immigrated to America in 1855 settling at Watertown, Wis. In 1856 they came to Henderson, Minnesota, settling on a farm in Dryden township where they were engaged in farming until 1905, after which they moved to Oregon where he and his wife lived with their son Henry and family. His wife died during the following year and he chose to live his last days with his son William in Eastern Oregon, but he died [sic.] not like the country and returned to Arlington in 1906 where he was tenderly cared for by his sons Chas. and Gustavus. Satisfied with this world’s hardships and pleasures he retired from all work and about eighteen months ago he became feeble and was gradually growing weaker and finally became helpless shortly after which he succumbed to his Master. His long and useful life was ended at the age of 98 years, less three days. The funeral was held Wednesday, Sept. 21st, his birthday, Rev. Brinkmann officiating. The following acted as pall bearers: J. R. Beatty, Fred Sander, Martin Bandelin, Herman Schulenberg, John Meyer, and Aug. Rischmueller. The Enterprise condoles with the bereaved relatives and friends in their hour of sorrow.
