Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Dwight Grabitske Arlington Enterprise Thursday 4 April 1907 DIED Mrs. Bertrang This week it becomes our sad duty to chronicle the death of one of Sibley county’s early settlers, Mrs. Margaret Bertrang, who passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jos. Haupt in this village on Wednesday, March 27th, at ten o’clock p.m. She had been suffering from pneumonia for some time, which was the immediate cause of her demise. Mrs. Margaret Bertrang was born in Neiderauvn, Tuxemburg, [sic.] Germany, on Jan. 1st, 1818, and was therefore 89 years of age. She came to this country with her husband in 1856 and settled at Lansing, Iowa, where they remained until 1857 when they moved to Green Isle township and later, in 1866, to Henderson, but for the last few years she has been a resident of this village. The deceased was married in Germany to Matt Bertrang in 1844, then Miss Margaret Rock, and eight children were born to them, seven of whom are living, four daughters and three sons, namely: Peter of California, Matt of Morton, Frank of Avoca, Mrs. J. P. Bertrand of Sleepy Eye, and Mrs. Jos. Haupt, Mrs. N. Thomes and Miss Catherine of this place. The deceased was a kind wife and mother and a good neighbor and her sudden demise was a shock to the whole community. The bereaved children have the sympathy of their many friends here and elsewhere. The remains were taken to Henderson Saturday and the funeral services were held at St. Joseph’s church, Rev. Fr. Cochlin officiating and the remains were interred in the cemetery south of town. Following is a partial list of those from abroad who were in attendance at the funeral: J. P. and E. P. Bertrand of Sleepy Eye, Mrs. Tavis, Mrs. Kelfgren, Mrs. Schieble, Mrs. Down and Misses Emma and Bertha Barberich of St. Peter, and Miss Susie Bertrang of Morton.
