FileFormatted by Terri--MNArchives Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Dwight Grabitske ========================================================================= - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Arlington Enterprise Thursday 10 August 1911 Louis Connolly Louis Connolly, a former resident of Jessenland, this county, passed away at his home in Mandan, N.D. last Thursday morning at 3 o’clock, of heart failure, after an illness of 14 days, aged 65 years. The funeral took place at Mandan Saturday and was attended by a number of relatives from this state. Deceased is one of the pioneers of North Dakota, going there the first time in 1865, when he crossed the plains from St. Paul with an expedition led by Col. Carnahan of the Third Illinois cavalry. He was prominent politically and held many positions of trust and responsibility, such as chairman of the County Boards of Oliver and Mercy counties, mayor of Mandan, member of the State Board of Equalization and also of the Reform School board. He was also well fixed financially, being a director of the First National Bank of Mandan, a stockholder in the Mandan Telephone company, and owned over 1,000 acres of fine farming land in Oliver county. Louis Connolly was born in Dundee, N.Y., Mar. 15, 1846, and came with his parents to Jessenland in the early fifties. In 1857 he went to St. Paul, where he engaged in railroad construction work. He was married Jun. 27, 1879, to Miss Mary Hensler of Jessenland, and shortly after went to North Dakota to make it his permanent home. His wife was at that time the only white woman in Mercer county and his nearest neighbor was 28 miles away. A post office was named in her honor. It is near the Missouri River north of Mandan. Besides his wife, he leaves one son and two daughters, also eight brothers. Among the latter is Dennis Connolly of Jessenland, who attended the funeral. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Locals: P. J. Hensler and Dennis Connolly left last Wednesday for Mandan, N.D., to attend the funeral of Louis Connolly, who passed away on the 29th.
