Mr. Finnegan was born in Ireland, Oct. 2, 1820, and was therefore 87 years, 5 months and 13 days old. While a young man he learned the tanner trade. In 1828 he came to New York where he remained six years, after which he moved to Pennsylvania where he resided for several years. He came to Minnesota in 1855 and steeled on a homestead in Jessenland where he resided over forty years. He was married to Mary Menton in 1849 and six children were born to them of whom four are living namely: Thos., of Jessenland; Luke, James and Mrs. Jas. Weier of St. Paul and Minneapolis. In the early days in this community there was great opportunity offered a noble man to assist his fellow mortals of which opportunities he always made use to the utmost of his abilities. We have often heard people of neighboring towns tell of how they used to go to the county seat in early days and if night would overtake them they would always find a warm welcome at the home of Mr. Finnegan. At the death of this old pioneer we are forcibly reminded that a member of the greatest generations that ever lived passed away. It took a Hussy, Deering, Deere and Mast to invent and manufacture the seeder the reaper, and the riding plow, but all this would avail us nothing if it were not for those noble pioneers who cleared the land, grubed the stumps, so these machines could work. Mr. Finnegan was always a devout member of the Catholic church. The funeral was attended by a large concourse of friends and neighbors of the deceased. - Green Isle Record
