John Grotsch came to this country from Germany in the early fifties, spending a few years in New York and New Orleans where he taught German school. In 1854 he came to Minnesota settling in Carver county during which time he served in the Civil War and received an honorable discharge. He removed to Sibley county in 1867, settling on a farm at New Rome where he conducted a hostelry for many years. During his residence at New Rome he became very popular and numbered his friends by the hundreds who deeply regret his demise. He retired from active business life about six years ago disposing of his property at New Rome, and moved with his wife to St. Paul to spend their reclining years. He was a member of the General Hancock Post G.A.R. of Henderson and later he joined the Acker Post at St. Paul. Besides his aged wife he leaves nine children, six sons and three daughters, viz: Chas. of Gaylord, Mrs. Biehofer, John W. Grotsch, Mrs. Pior, and Herman and George Grotsch of St. Paul, Mrs. Fred Tetzlaff of this place and William of Green Isle. The funeral was held from the home in St. Paul last Thursday afternoon. May his soul rest in peace.
