Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Dwight Grabitske --------------------------------------------------------------------- Arlington Enterprise Thursday 6 March 1919 Pioneer Settler Commits Suicide Gottlieb Lichttenegger, well known pioneer settler of this community, passed away Tuesday at noon as the result of injuries which he inflicted upon his person sometime during the night by cutting his throat and arm with an old razor. When found in bed by the Henry Knight folks, with whom he made his hom, his throat and arm were frightfully cut, the windpipe being entirely severed. Deceased had been suffering more or less for several months past with senil demensia, which became gradually worse until recently it became necessary to have some one with him continually. Monday morning he grew exceptionally violent and a physician was called after which he seemed contented and rested easier, remaining in his bed all that day and the following night. About 6:30 A.M. tuesday Mr. and Mrs. Knight discoverd what he had done. The razor was found concealed in the bed clothes. He was entirely conscious until he passed away, while the physicians were dressing his wounds. The razor which he used to take his life was a very old make, one which he brought with him from the old country, but as his attendents had already taken several razors from him they felt secure. Gottlieb Lichttenegger was born at Ischle, Austria, April 30, 1835 and reached tha age of 81 years, 1 month and 3 days. He came to America in the spring of 1868, settling in Jessenland and about two years later caem to reside on a farm in Green Isle township, 3 miles north of Arlington. He made his home here ever since and came to reside in Arlington about two weeks ago, living with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Henry P. Knight. He was married to Barbara Fallenhauser and eight children were born to them, two sons and his wife preceding him in death. His aged wife died about eleven years ago. The children are as follows: Mrs. Henry Schauer, Mrs. Math. Miller, Mrs. H. P. Knight and Mrs. Emil Wolff, all of Arlington; Bart Lichttenegger of Gaylord and Gottlieb Lichttenegger, Jr. of Lemberg, Sask., Canada. Mr. Lichttenegger was one of the very first settlers in this part of Sibley County and his industry and integrity enabled him to accumulate a comfortable fortune in later years. He was always a good citizen and his host of friends and acquaintances were shocked to hear of the unfortunate circumstances which resulted in his death, and thei sympathy is extended to the sorrowing relatives. The funeral will take place Friday afternoon at 2:00, with interment in the Lutheran cemetery.
