He had been ailing with cancer of the bowels since last October when he took to his bed, and he failed gradually until passing away. He reached the age of 79 years, 1 month and 1 day. Mr. Meffert was born in Germany on Dec. 8, 1840 and came to America with a sister and brother at the age of 16 years, settling in the state of Illinois. On Dec. 8th, 1864 he was married to Miss Marie Bramer, who survives her husband. They celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary last December and were one of the oldest married couples in the county. They came to Minnesota in 1874 and settled on the present farm home where he died, now conducted by his son Herman. Four children were born to them, three sons and a daughter, namely: John, Herman and Mrs. Louis thoele (Mary), of Arlington township, and Henry of this village. Besides his aged wife, he is also survived by several brothers and sisters, a number of whom are still living in Germany. Mr. Meffert was always held in high esteem by a large circle of friends and acquaintances who knew him as a man of sterling character, a loving husband and father. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at 1 o’clock with services at the home and at St. John’s Lutheran church. Rev. M. F. Abraham officiated.
