Mrs. Catherine O’Connell expired at her home in New Auburn town, Sibley county last Monday afternoon at the advanced age of over 84 years. She had been a sufferer during the past ten months from injuries sustained to her hip thru [sic.] a fall, and during almost the entire time had been bed ridden. This affliction, together with failing vitality occasioned by her age, was the cause of her demise. The late Mrs. Catherine O’Connell was a native of Ireland. Her maiden name was Walsh. She was born February 9th, 1828, in County Kilkenny, where she married John O’Connell and immigrated with him to the United States in 1851. They came to New York and after a short residence in that city removed to the state of Maryland and lived there three years. They then moved to Wisconsin and ten years later in 1865 came to New Auburn town where her husband bought a farm, that has since remained the family homestead. Her husband passed to the Great Beyond on July 29, 1906. The late Mrs. O’Connell was the mother of ten children, of whom four survive. They are James, who lives on the old homestead; Mrs. Mary Murphy and Patrick J. of Rich Valley town, and Mrs. Elle E. Murphy of Glencoe. The deceased was a woman possessing the virtures of her race, ever solicitous for welfare of her family and those with whom she associated intimately. She was highly esteemed by all who knew her and many staunch friends she made in her prime years comforted her during her reclining years and tried to lighten the burden of her long months of sickness. The funeral services were held at St. George’s church at 10 o’clock Wednesday morning. Rev. Father Bryne officiated, and the remains were laid to rest in Sts. Peter and Paul’s cemetery. The members of the family have the sympathy of their friends in their loss. --- Glencoe Enterprise. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
