Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Dwight Grabitske --------------------------------------------------------------------- Arlington Enterprise Thursday 21 April 1904 SAD DROWNING ACCIDENT Gustav, the three-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas Schade drowned in High Island Creek Thursday. The angel of death has again taken another young life to its eternal rest. Gustav, the three- year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Schade of Arlington township, living about two and one half miles from town, was drowned in High Island creek last Thursday. The creek runs through Mr. Schade’s land and the three younger children, among whom Gustav was the youngest, were playing near where their older brother was plowing. As they were to return home, they had to cross a plank laid over the creek, and the supposition is that the two older children ran on ahead and did not turn to notice whether their little brother was with them or not until they got to the house, when they saw that he was not, but thought nothing of it as they believed he might be hiding somewhere and would come in a short time. At about 11 o’clock a search was begun but it was not until 1 o’clock in the afternoon that he was found when his father noticed a cap laying on the water near a fence which crossed the stream. On investigating near there he found they boy’s body among a lot of brush and wood which had been carried by the stream and had settled near the fence. He had been carried about 150 to 200 yards down the stream from where the plank crossed it. The child was born Oct. 4, 1900 and was a bright little boy and the loss will be felt keenly at the home where he was the pride and joy of the family. The parents have the sincere sympathy of their many friends in their sad and sudden loss. The funeral took place Sunday at 1:30 o’clock in the afternoon, the last remains taken to the German Lutheran cemetery where they were interred, Rev. Heidmann performing the last sad rites.
